Central Air Conditioning

The central air conditioner has revolutionized the way facilities are supplied with heating and cooling in today's society since its existence. Also known as HVAC-Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, the objective of a centralized air conditioner is to condition the air within a facility for comfort, throughout the entire facility simultaneously. As with air conditioners of the past, these units had primarily one function and served as a stand-alone unit to only focus on the particular area in which it was placed. Typically, these units were used to only supply rooms with cool air and thus only used during hot summer months. The typical stand-alone air conditioner was a successor of the traditional oscillating fan, which was even more limited in its cooling function as well as the capacity to which a room or area could be cooled. The central air conditioner combated all of the problems of its predecessors through an intricate refrigerant and air duct system that allows for regulatory air conditioning on a much larger scale.

The Cooling Process by Which the Central Air Conditioner Functions

The central air conditioner uses a duct system to distribute air about multiple areas within a facility. These units are most noticed and applied in homes and building structures such as the workplace. Some more modernized apartments complexes also utilize the centralized air conditioning unit.

The ducts used to distribute air are set-up within the actual structure of a building or home's walls and releases in various areas within the facility through air vents. These ducts can range in diameter anywhere from a half foot and up depending on the building structure it is servicing. There are also mini air ducts, that are as small as 2 inches in diameter, that are used for a higher velocity of air flow where more energy is being exerted as well.

The unit by which conditions the air itself is actually a system of utilizing the available air within the structure versus the creation of new air, as many people may believe. For cooling the air, a refrigerant system is used to chill the surrounding air within structure to a set temperature of comfort. This works by way of extracting existing air and running it through a filtration system within the unit. Return ducts are used to draw in the surrounding air as it is ran through condensers and compressors for dehumidification. The filters in which this air passes also helps in purifying the air from pollutants before being returned to the establishment during the chill cycle. These air processors are generally set up outside of the actual building structure, as they are very bulky and noisy.

The Heating Process by Which the Central Air Conditioner Functions

When it comes to heating a facility, the process of conditioning the air is similar. Surrounding air is conditioned via a heat pump before being redistributed back into the treated area. Heating coils are used to warm the passing air as it is released into the air ducts for distribution. A thermostat regulates the temperature of the air and is usually found close to the indoor portion of the unit itself, which contains the actual heat pump.

Most central air conditioning units have an exhaust mechanism as well, which typically sits atop of some building structure. This unit extracts dry and humid air from the building itself by way of reverse oscillation and releases this air outside of the home or building structure. During hot summer months, some may use this feature as an alternative to running the air cooling part of the system to save on energy. Once dry and humid air is removed, a more chilled and comfortable air flow about an establishment is left. This feature is separate from the heating and cooling air unit itself and can usually function from a simple flip of the switch. This exhaust system is also good for extracting smoke from small fires or over cooking within the establishment, although should not be primarily relied on as a source of safety when it comes to fires and heavy smoke.

Because the central air conditioner can heat and cool an establishment simultaneously, it provides much convenience and efficiency when trying to service multiple parties within that establishment. Some drawbacks, however, to the use of this unit includes comforting one person while discomforting another. Where one person may turn on the unit to chill an establishment to their liking, this means that every room and area within the establishment will also receive the same amount of chilled air at that temperature. To combat this however, there are vent enclosures that can cut off air supply to that particular area. Another added accessory may be to also purchase a ventilation cover for added protection against unwanted air flow.

Another concern with the centralized unit is energy efficiency. Because these units have a larger task at distributing air evenly and simultaneously, it therefore requires the use of more energy to acquire this. This can also be combated through the use timers that turn the unit off during non use. Also, setting the unit to the desired temperature will automatically shut off the system once that temperature is reached. For even more efficiency, one can shop for a unit with an energy star rating. Energy star rated units are units that have passed inspection of energy efficiency, set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. These units will generally have a blue and white sticker with a star logo affixed for acknowledgement.
